  • Mets Team Captain

David Wright will always be the best Mets team captain, but now that he's "retired", who should be honored with a C on their jersey?

Can it be a pitcher? If not, I don't think a hitter is deserving of the honor...

I don't believe most baseball teams have "a captain". If one arises, great, give him the recognition of the C. But what i love about the baseball C is that it really is special and significant. Unlike football (4 captains) or hockey) where you need to have a captain and 2 assistants, baseball there is no "need" and so when you do it, it really is recognizing an important member of your team.

Right now, I have not heard of anyone deserving of that C and the biggest club house leader is Frazier who is on a short deal and then leaving.

I agree at this moment this team does not have a captain. The media has mentioned Conforto possibly being the face of the franchise now that Wright is gone but he has to step up his game to be the face of the franchise let alone be considered worthy of wearing a C on his uniform.

you know that when Conforto reaches free agency, that he'll be gone...

To me, it seems deGrom is the new face of the franchise. Im just not sure they'd put a C on his chest since he's only in games every 5th day, but if he's involved in the dugout each game, I don't see why it can't work.

Conforto is the logical choice for a potential captaincy, but he has to prove he can A. stay on the field and B. be productive for a season regularly.

Baseball captains are not very important, though, so I don't think it matters much either way.

Agreed. Just a talking point. I don't think the next Mets Captain is on our current roster.

I think Conforto COULD be that guy, but it is still an open topic, he has to perform more consistently.

2 years from now, as he's developed into a solid player, and gets a big extension to be the face of the franchise... then we can talk about putting the C on his chest... premature right now.

I agree there shouldn't be one yet. There can be team leaders without a captain. If the organization finds that one player excels both in the field and the clubhouse and they're a lifer then you can give him the captain title. Also the fans have to embrace him like they did Wright for it to even have a chance of being effective. It's one of those "you'll know when it happens" situations.

You need to earn the title over years of team leadership.

The team is years away from selecting a new captain.

Right you are Dru, years could be decades until that combination of leadership and accomplishment on and off the field come together in a player with earned fan acceptance and admiration. Keith and Gary Carter served as co-captains 1988-89. NY born and bred John Franco served 2001-05, it was as captain that he lead the team in support of the 9/11 responders at WTC.

If there was a casino betting option...I'd put down a wager on Nimmo...say 2024, a year after he signs a 5 year extension.
