      Hoping they still go after a Britton or Tony Sipp for lefty/set up reliever.

          Matz has no business being a starting pitcher in Citi Field; just as Vargas has no business being a starting pitcher on the road...and both kind of suck vs RH'd batters for power

          HRs allowed:

          Matz: 17 at home; 8 on the road;
          Vargas: 14 on the road; 4 at home;

          Matz allowed 23 HRs vs RH'd batters; 4 vs LH'd batters;
          Vargas allowed 15 HRs vs RH'd batters; 3 vs LH'd batters;

            for all the hype about sabermetrix, do teams even notice shit like that about pitchers?

        • #20
          That is exactly what Sabermetrics tracks. The problem is that the manager has to use that information.

            That information is useful in setting up fantasy pitching, but is useless in real life. What are BVW and Mickey going to do with Matz and Vargas who combined would make one effective SP.....bench Matz at home and leave Vargas in NY when the team is on the road?

              no...on the road: Vargas is in the bullpen...at home: Matz is in the bullpen...

              neither one is a 200+ innings pitcher...conserves their innings while maximizing their effectiveness...I don't know how many HRs that I've seen Matz give up right by the M&M's in Left field

                remember all those people who were ready to give up on Wheeler last season (myself included). He was 27. Matz's age? 27. Similarly, all the potential is there, he just has to put it together.

                Absolutely cherry picking here, but in his last 8 starts (approx 1/4 of a season), he had a 2.44 ERA, 0.948 WHIP, 10.36 K/9, .329 slugging against. You know what his record in these 8 starts were? 0-1. Matz deserves to start and to be honest, having him as a #4 is far superior than the junk most teams throw out there at the back of the rotation.

                Full disclosure: yes, he blew up for 13 runs/11 earned in 2.2 innings the previous 2 games, but his whole year was 30 starts with a sub 4 ERA out of your #4 pitcher... Give him some run support, and he should be a double digit winner our of the #4 spot...
