  • Mets Notes: Maldonado, Realmuto, Aldred

    by MARK POLISHUK
    2 Dec 2018 at 10:15 PM CDT
    • The Mets have longtime Yankees minor league pitching coach Scott Aldred on their list of bullpen coach candidates, according to Puma (Twitter link). Aldred is currently working a roving pitching coordinator in the Yankees’ farm system after spending the previous decade as a pitching coach at multiple minor league levels, including a lengthy stint at Triple-A.

A colleague's cousin is Craig Bjornson. In 2017 he was the bullpen coach for the Houston Astros, in 2018 he was the bullpen coach for the Boston Red Sox, both teams World Series champs. Maybe the Mets should consider trying to pry him away from the Sox rather than bring on another yankee coach! He could be that good luck charm to bring that Championship to Orange & Blue!

    • Rangers To Sign Rafael Montero

      by JEFF TODD
      5 Dec 2018 at 10:35 AM CDT

The Rangers have reportedly agreed to a minor-league pact with right-hander Rafael Montero. The Roster Roundup site indicated a deal was in place, with Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News citing a source who indicated Montero had indeed signed. Once a top prospect with the Mets, Montero is still working back from Tommy John surgery. He’ll also be looking to get his career on track after running into difficulties in transitioning to the majors.

Montero has already thrown 192 1/3 innings at the game’s highest level, most of which came in 2017, but carries only a 5.38 cumulative ERA. He has averaged nearly a strikeout per inning in the bigs, but also has surrendered 5.2 free passes per nine. There were some positives in 2017, as Montero worked in the 94 mph range with his average fastball and produced a healthy 48.1% groundball rate.

Now 28 years of age, and rehabbing a TJ procedure from last March, Montero will not be at full health in time for compete for a job in camp. But he ought to be ramping up for a return to action by the middle of the upcoming season and could certainly put himself on the radar of the pitching-needy Rangers if he’s able to rediscover some of his former promise.

        • Dug this out of some previous post in a galaxy far far away, imagine if Montero carried that all the way up the ladder.

I think everyone can pretty much agree that Syndergaard is someone special, and because of that Montero gets overlooked. This season (2013)

Montero spent time at AA as did Syndergaard

          Syndergaard 54 3.00 3.24 1.07 5.8:1
          Montero 67 2.43 1.88 0.92 7.2:1
          .
Montero also spent time at AAA, as did Wheeler

          • If I remember correctly, both Montero and deGrom came up virtually at the same time because they needed a couple of arms because of injuries...Montero was expected to be a force, deGrom was more of one of those callups because he had a pulse...

            deGrom impressed, Montero did not

Montero player soccer in the DR and didn't pitch until his late teens, didn't sign until age 20. Alderson pushed him through the minors....4 teams in his 1st season. A and A+ in his second season and AA-AAA in year 3. With 360 professional IP he was called up 3 times to start 8 games (43 IP), 5 of which were into the 6th inning with 3 runs or fewer allowed. The ERA for those 5 starts was 1.80 and whip of 1.13. The run support for his 8 starts 1.95
