    NL East Notes: Mets, Nido, Betances

    • Tomas Nido confirmed that complications from COVID-19 ended his season, tweets Newsday’s Tim Healey. Said Nido via instagram: “Unfortunately, my season was cut short after getting Covid and other related complications while trying to come back. Time to turn the page and prepare for a strong 2021.” Nido appeared in just 7 games for the Mets this season, his fourth straight of seeing time in the bigs. For his career, the 26-year-old backstop holds a .197/.234/.319 triple slash across 270 plate appearances. Veterans Wilson Ramos and Robinson Chirinos handled most of the catching responsibilities for the Mets this season, but both could be free agents. The Mets hold $10MM team option for the 33-year-old Ramos and $6.25MM team option for the 36-year-old Chirinos. Ramos has a $1.25M buyout, while Chirinos’ buyout is for $1MM. Nido remains under team control – and he’s out of options – so he’ll either need to be a part of the catching picture for the Mets in 2021 or risk exposure to waivers.
    • Dellin Betances holds a $6MM player option for 2021 to remain with the Mets, and it’s unclear what direction he’s leaning as of now, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (via Twitter). As DiComo notes, the option comes with a $3MM buyout, so Betances’ decision really comes down to a $3MM question. Even after a season in which he made just 14 appearances for a 5.56 ERA/4.34 FIP across 11 1/3 innings with 7.9 K/9 to 7.1 BB/9, it’s reasonable to expect someone to bid that much for a reliever with high-end upside like Betances. Still, it’s now been two seasons since Betances was a dominant arm out of the pen, and as a New York native who’s spent his entire major-league career in New York, he may look for a way to remain with the Mets. Betances averaged 93.4 mph on his four-seamer this season, a far cry from his days as a 96-97 mph high-leverage arm with the Yankees.

                      14 Mets become free agents,
                      with team officially declining Wilson Ramos' option
                      Marcus Stroman and Justin Wilson are among the free agents

                      With the Mets declining the Wilson Ramos' contract for the 2021 season, 14 players are set to become free agents Wednesday with the World Series over.

                      News of the Mets' declining Ramos' $10 million option, which will require paying a $1.5 million buyout, was first reported by Mike Puma of the New York Post and later made official.

                      The move to decline Ramos' option was expected, with him coming off a season where he was a liability on both sides of the ball.
                      The Mets also declined club options for the 2021 season on Robinson Chirinos and Todd Frazier, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.

                      Meanwhile, Yoenis Cespedes, Jared Hughes, Jed Lowrie, Jake Marisnick, Eduardo Nunez, Rick Porcello, Erasmo Ramirez, Rene Rivera, Marcus Stroman, Michael Wacha, and Justin Wilson all officially became free agents Wednesday morning.

                      Of the Mets' free agents, the ones it could make the most sense for them to try to retain are Stroman and Wilson.

                      When it comes to Stroman, the Mets have until next Monday, Nov. 2, to decide whether or not to extend him the one-year qualifying offer worth $18 million.
                      If the Mets extend the offer and Stroman accepts, they will get him for the 2021 season at $18 million.

                      If the Mets extend the offer and Stroman rejects it, they will receive draft pick compensation if Stroman signs elsewhere.

                      The Mets could also extend the offer (or not) and attempt to work out a long-term extension with Stroman.

                        The Mets announced on Wednesday afternoon that the club has signed 11 minor-league free agents, including infielder Jose Peraza, outfielder Mallex Smith, and reliever Arodys Vizcaíno.

                        Peraza, a 26-year-old who will be invited to 2021 spring training, 26, had eight doubles, one triple, and eight RBI in 34 games with the Red Sox last season. Peraza has a career slash line of .270/.310/.372 with 75 doubles, 14 triples, 29 homers, 162 RBI and 78 stolen bases in 554 major league games.

                        Smith, a 27-year-old outfielder with serious speed, has bounced around the leagues since first debuting with the Atlanta Braves in 2016. In 2019, he led the American League with 46 stolen bases as a Seattle Mariner and led the AL with 10 triples in 2018 with Tampa Bay.

                        The 29-yearold Vizcaino has experience as a major-league closer, saving 50 games from 2015-19 as a member of the Atlanta Braves. Overall, he’s pitched to a 3.01 ERA as a big-leaguer, striking out 218 batters in 194.1 innings, allowing just 18 home runs and walking 90 batters.

                        The list of Mets’ minor-league additions includes three players -- Luis Carpio, Johneshwy Fargas, and Bruce Maxwell – who were with the team last year in spring training.

                            the catchers are just minor league roster fill so that they have warm bodies behind the plate for spring training when ST is overwhelmed with pitchers

                              Could Smith (even if he bats left) be an indication they are going to go hard after Realmuto and Bauer? They get a light-hitting but above average CF on the cheap leave the $$$ for the bigger fish.

                                possible...also possible that it could be an indication that they may go with a Rosario experiment in CF, with Mallex as his platoon and/or defensive replacement if it doesn't work immediately
